Wheelock's Fine Arts Night 2016 'The Noisy Paintbox', was a GREAT SUCCESS!
In the spring of 2016 we tried a different model to showcase our students progress in and experience with the arts at Wheelock. We combined the (school-wide) art show and the (grade 3) music show into one combined arts experience….
The grade 2-3 art show was bookended by two musical performances provided by grade 3 students. In the opening performance four grade three classes presented musical pieces inspired by or in conjunction with visual art elements.
In the final performance, the remaining four grade three classes presented musical pieces inspired by or in conjunction with visual art elements. The final musical number involved the whole community in a musical-experience with a presentation and celebration of the art created in the community-art project.
In between both performances families and students:
perused the art show set up in the mango gym
participated in a community-art project set up in the art show space, facilitated by our art teacher, Ms. Babin. This became part of the final music performance
participated in a series of 10-minute mini music workshops facilitated by our music teacher, Mrs. Stover that became part of the final music performance.

Third Grade students concluded a unit on Native American music. In their final lesson students read The Flute Player, An Apache Folktale by Michael LaCapa. They listened to R. Carlos Nakai playing Native American flute and were then asked to write about or draw the picture the music painted in their head.

Check out this awesome music video featuring Mr. Kuehl's and Mrs. Buyley's classes. The students put together a music video inspired by Sara Bareilles' song 'Brave.'
In this project students met several learning objectives including: singing, moving to steady beat, dancing, understanding and working with the form and structure of a song and performance expectations.
